Navigating uncertainty in a Shifting World

24 Nov 2025

You won’t need me to tell you that the past year has been marked by turbulence on the global stage.

A combative new US president has taken office, tariffs are reshaping trade and conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East has dominated headlines.

Throw in economic stagnation – in part fuelled by all of the above – and it’s no wonder people are more anxious now about the future than at any time since the height of the Cold War.

So, what’s all that got to do with the world of work?

Well. Our workplaces are not cut off from the real world – they don’t exist in some kind of bubble where what happens outside the door simply doesn’t matter.

For employers, the challenge is not only to manage the operational impact of these shifts but also to support staff who are navigating a climate of uncertainty and diminished job security.

1. Recognising the human impact

Global events may feel distant from the day‑to‑day operations of a business, yet their effects are felt in the workplace.

Rising costs, supply chain disruption and political instability filter down into employee concerns about job stability and financial wellbeing. Managers would do well to acknowledge this new reality.

Pretending that external pressures do not affect staff morale risks eroding trust. Instead, employers should create space for open conversations, where employees feel able to voice concerns and seek reassurance.

2. Prioritising clear communication

In times of uncertainty, silence is rarely neutral. When leaders fail to communicate, employees often fill the gaps with speculation.

Regular updates, even when the message is that the situation is being monitored, help to reduce anxiety.

Clarity about business priorities, financial health and organisational direction provides staff with a sense of stability and can have a much-needed calming effect.

Managers should be encouraged, where appropriate, to share information consistently and to frame messages in a way that balances honesty with reassurance.

3. Supporting mental wellbeing

The psychological toll of global instability should not be underestimated.

Employees may be dealing with stress not only about their jobs but also about the wider world.

Employers can respond by strengthening wellbeing initiatives. This might include access to employee assistance programmes, mental health first aiders or flexible working arrangements that allow staff to manage personal pressures.

Importantly, wellbeing support should be visible and accessible, not hidden in policy documents.

4. Building skills for resilience

Economic stagnation and shifting trade patterns highlight the need for adaptable workforces.

Employers can help staff feel more secure by investing in skills development. Training in digital tools, leadership and cross‑cultural communication equips employees to thrive in changing conditions.

Upskilling also signals a commitment to long‑term employability, which can counterbalance fears of redundancy. Employers should frame learning opportunities as both a business necessity and a personal investment in staff futures.

5. Strengthening organisational culture

Periods of uncertainty test the resilience of workplace culture.

Employers who foster collaboration, inclusivity and shared purpose are better placed to weather external shocks.

HR leaders should focus on reinforcing values, celebrating achievements and recognising contributions.

Small gestures of appreciation can have an outsized impact when employees are feeling unsettled.

A culture that prizes transparency and mutual support helps staff feel anchored, even when the wider world feels unstable.

6. Looking Ahead

Let’s be honest, the global landscape is unlikely to settle quickly.

And while employers cannot control geopolitical events, they can control how they respond.

By prioritising communication, wellbeing, skills and culture, organisations can provide staff with a sense of stability and purpose.

In doing so, they not only support their people through turbulent times but also strengthen their own resilience for the challenges ahead.
